The Lich King is a powerful character from the World of Warcraft franchise, primarily known through his role in the Warcraft III and World of Warcraft video games.
Initially, the Lich King was created by the Burning Legion to weaken Azeroth. The original Lich King, Ner'zhul, was trapped within the Frozen Throne. However, the Lich King is more famously known as the identity assumed by Arthas Menethil.
Arthas, a prince of Lordaeron, succumbed to the Lich King's influence in his pursuit of power to combat the undead Scourge. Arthas merged with Ner'zhul, becoming the dominant personality and the new Lich King.
The Lich King's first appearance as Arthas is a subject of debate, but generally considered as Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002).
